Cyberbullying is when someone uses technology, such as a computer or cell phone, to hurt you on purpose. Bullies have more power than the people they hurt. They may be older or more popular or they may know something private or embarrassing about you.

Disablities Voice Against Violence- Bullying (persons with disabilities)
www.bpvav.com/disablities.html

Violence is any physical, psychological or sexual maltreatment, abuse or neglect of a person. The problem of assault and abuse against persons with disabilities is complicated by the fact that most of the abuse is perpetrated by someone whom the individual has an established relationship such as family member, intimate partner or spouse, or a support giver. Abuse against a person with disabilities is a violation of trust and an abuse of power in a relationship where the person should have the right to absolute safety. In many cases, it is also a crime.

International Stand Up Day!  February 27th

Why Pink?

The color of the STAND UP pledge shirts, is based on a campaign started by Travis Price and David Shepherd, two senior students who took a stand against a freshmen student being bullied for wearing a pink shirt. This act of leadership provides a great example for those who are "on the fence" about displaying their own personal stance against bullying.

Pledge shirts are $10 each (plus a flat $2 s&h fee per shirt) (or £5+£1.50). Schools ordering 50 or more will receive a pink STOOD UP flag to fly, marking the school as one in which a significant amount of support exists for victims of bullying. STAND UP Pledge Shirts were designed to be extremely effective in achieving a variety of aspects involved in stopping bullying. Simply "addressing" bullying will not lead to a significant change in your school or workplace. Participating in International Stand Up to Bullying Day will achieve the following:

  • address bullying in an extremely "loud" way. (Try ignoring 100's of pink shirts!)
  • approach bystanders to take a personal stance either for or against bullying.
  • create and effectively identify a peer based support structure where victims of bullying can turn for help or guidance
  • enable bystanders to make a non-confrontational statement about their decision to be in-tolerant of the behavior of bullies from this point forward.
  • provide funding for necessary tools to insure safety and make it easy for participants to honor their pledge to STAND UP against bullying.
